Message from Hanford Fire Department Chief:
The Hanford Fire Department had its origins during those dark days of World War II when our country needed to develop a weapon system ahead of the Axis Powers and the 586 square miles now managed by the Department of Energy became the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Throughout the decades since the men and women of the Hanford Fire Department have protected critical facilities, processes, and personnel to the highest standards of the fire service. We are a progressive department embracing technology and best practices to ensure a constant state of readiness. Our people are our most critical asset and they are engaged daily in finding ways to make HFD better. We are a proactive, all-hazards emergency response agency tasked not only with protecting the Hanford Site; but also, to assisting our local mutual aid partners in protecting people and property throughout the Tri-Cities area and south-central Washington. Every day in every way, we are proud to be HFD
- Norbert W. Kuhman, Fire Chief
Training provided:
HFD holds a 16-week new-hire Firefighter academy, held at the Department of Energys HAMMER training center. Recruits completing the HFD new-hire academy will receive IFSAC Firefighter II certification. The mission is to expose recruits to the most modern firefighting equipment and techniques, in addition to preparing them to be a self-motivated, integral part of the HFD team upon graduation from the academy. Hanford fire recruits are put through a rigorous 16-week academy. Recruits will receive hundreds of hours of training with both written and practical evaluation. - Assistant Chief Nickolus Thomas, HFD Training and Certification Chief
More information about the HAMMER training center can be found here: https://hammer.hanford.gov/
As a condition of hire, all Firefighters will be enrolled in the Washington State Joint Apprenticeship Training Council - Firefighter apprenticeship program with the expectation of obtaining a Journeyman Firefighter certificate.
